What happens at your first visit
Most patients find treatment almost painless and relaxing. Here is how the visit unfolds.
-
Step 1
We talk
You tell us what is bothering you, your health history and any medications you take.
-
Step 2
We find the pattern
The same complaint can need different care in different people, so we look for where energy is stuck and where it is weak.
-
Step 3
We treat
Single-use, sterile needles thinner than 0.30 mm. Expect a light prick, then a dull, heavy ache or warmth at the point.
-
Step 4
We plan together
You leave with a schedule for visits and, if they suit you, herbs, food and lifestyle suggestions.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on how long you have had the problem, how severe it is, and how actively you take part in your care. Many people notice a change within the first few treatments.
| Recent condition | 5 to 8 visitsat least once a week |
|---|---|
| Long-standing condition | 10 to 15 visitsat least once a week |
| Staying well | Monthly or seasonala preventive tune-up |

Questions people ask
Does acupuncture hurt?
You may feel a light prick as a needle goes in. After that, we look for a dull, heavy, spreading ache called the "Qi sensation," which shows the point is working. Some people also feel tingling or warmth.
Are the needles safe?
Yes. We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles and follow Clean Needle Technique, including safe disposal. Side effects are rare. You may see slight bruising that fades in a few days.
Are Chinese herbs safe?
The herbs we use are concentrated, pharmaceutical-grade plant extracts tested for contaminants and heavy metals, with no animal or mineral products. Herbs are medicine, so they are prescribed only after a full history and intake, and dosed for your pattern.
Can I come while I'm seeing my doctor?
Yes, and we encourage it. Acupuncture is complementary care. We are happy to speak with your physician to coordinate.
I take prescription medication. Is that a problem?
Acupuncture does not conflict with medications. Herbs can, so we review everything you take before prescribing. If a medication may be causing your symptoms, we will ask you to check with your prescribing doctor.
How does acupuncture work?
Traditional theory says it rebalances Qi along the body's channels. Researchers have proposed that it affects the nervous system, pain signaling and the body's own pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins.
